How a Calcutta Works
Raffle Tickets: $5 each
Pool Distribution:
- 60% for the Melbourne Cup winner
- 20% for 2nd place
- 10% for 3rd place
- 10% even for the last place!
A Calcutta includes two parts: selling raffle tickets and auctioning horses
- Raffle Sales: Tickets are $5 each, with no purchase limit. All funds go into the Calcutta Pool. Sales occur before and during the event until the MC announces the end.
- Raffle Drawing: A winning ticket is drawn for each horse, giving the holder ownership for the auction. They can sell the horse for 50% of the auction price or buy it for the same amount, forfeiting raffle winnings.
- Auction: Each horse is auctioned, with 50% of the sale going to the pool and 50% to the ticket holder. For example, if a horse sells for $1,000, $500 goes to the pool, and $500 goes to the ticket holder.
- Calcutta Pool: The final pool consists of total funds from the raffle and auction, distributed as follows: 1st place (60%), 2nd (20%), 3rd (10%), and 10% to last. All auctioned horses must be paid for immediately or will be re-auctioned.
